SEARCA Biotechnology Information Center (SEARCA BIC) releases The Bt Eggplant Story, a new video series that documents the development of Bt eggplant in the Philippines and highlights the clamor of farmers for the release of the genetically modified (GM) crop.
While the approval of Bt Eggplant is still underway in the Philippines, it has been commercialized in Bangladesh and already improving the lives of their farmers. Experts speak on the success of the GM crop in the country and the importance of political will in ensuring that products of modern biotechnology reach the farmers.
Across the country, Feed the Future is supporting the plant’s growth to help farmers like Hossain protect their livelihoods and maintain food security, even in the face of a dangerous pest. Because Bt brinjal provides almost complete control of the pest, farmers have begun rapidly adopting it — from 20 farmers in 2014 to 34,000 farmers in 2018. It is estimated that widespread adoption of Bt eggplant in Bangladesh will result in a benefit of more than $200 million for brinjal farmers in Bangladesh (Source: Feed The Future).
The Bt Eggplant Story series was produced in collaboration with Feed the Future South Asia Eggplant Improvement Partnership, Department of Agriculture-Biotechnology Program Office, and Greenbug Media Productions.
