Bt Eggplant Story – Experts Speak About Safety and Economic Benefits of Bt Eggplant

SEARCA Biotechnology Information Center (SEARCA BIC) releases The Bt Eggplant Story, a new video series that documents the development of Bt eggplant in the Philippines and highlights the clamor of farmers for the release of the genetically modified (GM) crop.

In this part of the series, experts from the academe give their insights on the GM crop. Prof. Cesar Quicoy, an economist from the University of the Philippines (UPLB)-College of Economics and Management speak on the potential economic benefits of Bt eggplant, with farmers’ spending less on pesticides and labor while increasing their marketable produce and income. Meanwhile, Prof. Felicito Rodriguez, a nutritionist from the UPLB-College of Home Economics, explain that there’s no difference between the commercial eggplant and Bt eggplant based on the results of their research.

Bt Eggplant Project Leader, Dr. Desiree Hautea also recalls the challenges they face in the development of the GM crop including negative remarks from critics and the changes in the country’s regulatory system.
