It includes manipulation of organisms on the molecular and genetic level to improve health, safety, nutrition and environment .Biotech is helping to heal the world by harnessing nature’s own toolbox and using ourown genetic makeup to heal the genetic diseases. In Current Scenario there are more than 250 biotechnology health care products and vaccinesavailable to patients, many for previously untreatable diseases. More than 13.3 million farmers around the world were using agricultural biotechnology to increase yields of their farm and to prevent damage from insects, pests and reduce farming’s impact on the environment.Modern biotechnology provides breakthrough on products and technologies to combat debilitating and rare diseases, reduce our environmentalfootprint, feed the hungry, and use less and cleaner energy, and have safer, cleaner and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes.

Recent advances in biotechnology are helping us prepare for and meet society’s most pressing challenges and the ways to rectify it .

Session 3: Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology

Agricultural biotechnology is an area of Agricultural Science associated with the involvement of scientific tools and techniques such as agronomycrop science and protection, entomology, agriculture machinery used to modify and improve living organisms Environmental biotechnology is the application of processes for the protection and restoration of the quality of the environment. The aim of environmental biotechnology is to prevent, arrest and reverse environmental degradation through the appropriate use of biotechnology in combination with other technologies such as Bioremediation .environmental biotechnology can make a significant contribution to sustainable development where the wastes can be minimized & modified, either by recycling to make new products, or by purifying so that the end product is less harmful to the environment. Replacing chemical materials and processes with biological technologies can reduce environmental damage.

Session 5: Animal Biotechnology

Animal biotechnology is the use of science and engineering to modify living organisms. The goal is to make products, to improve animals and to develop microorganisms for specific agricultural uses.

Examples of animal biotechnology include creating transgenic animalssustainability in animal production, use of animals as animal bioreactors ,to improve animals or the products they produce that promote human health and to enhances ability to detect, treat and prevent diseases.

Session 7: Genetics and Molecular Biotechnology

Genetics and Molecular Biology is the use of laboratory techniques to study and modify nucleic acids and proteins for applications in areas such as human and animal health, agriculture, and the environment. It covers a wide scope of problems related to molecular and cell biology including structural and functional genomicsCell transformation, production of  Gene cloning systemsMutation analysis etc. By the introduction of the latest trends in the field of molecular biology in the form of genetic engineering, an entirely new quality is developed. Instead of simply isolation of some products that some organism already synthesized, it is now possible to make the whole “biological factories” from microorganisms, plants or animal cells that will produce great quantities of valuable compounds such as proteins, vitamins, amino acids, antibiotics, etc. On the other hand, by the use of genetic engineering it is possible to clone the genes encoding this product and transfer them into another organism, or make transgenic organisms.

Session 12: Stem Cell Biotechnology

There are several types of cells which come from one cell source. In the early stages of human development, these cells can become any tissue or organ – that is, they have not yet become specialized. These cells are called stem cells.

Stem cells have two important characteristics that make them different from other types of cells. All stem cells are unspecialized, and renew themselves for long periods of time through cell division. Under certain biochemical cues they can be made to differentiate. Laboratory Methods for Biotechnology is nothing but Hands-on Training, one of the most important aspects in experimental biology. This is an introductory-level course designed to acquaint participants with the wide range of modern techniques available for separating and purifying biomolecules.  Students enrolled in Biotechnology programs have an extensive opportunity to learn many cutting-edge molecular biology methods from lecture- and reading- based courses.  The goal of this field is to expose students to various techniques in biotechnology as well as to prepare them for independence in research settings.  The fundamentals of each technique will be presented, including practical examples such as Gel electrophoresisImmunocytochemistry, ELISA & Spectrophotometry, Assays etc.

“CRISPR” (pronounced “crispr”) stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, which are the hallmark of a bacterial defense system that forms the basis for CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technology. In the field of genome engineering, the term “CRISPR” or “CRISPR-Cas9” is often used loosely to refer to the various CRISPR-Cas9 and -CPF1, (and other) systems that can be programmed to target specific stretches of genetic code and to edit DNA at precise locations, as well as for other purposes, such as for new diagnostic tools. With these systems, researchers can permanently modify genes in living cells and organisms and, in the future, may make it possible to correct mutations at precise locations in the human genome in order to treat genetic causes of disease. Other systems are now available, such as CRISPR-Cas13’s, that target RNA provide alternate avenues for use, and with unique characteristics that have been leveraged for sensitive diagnostic tools, such as SHERLOCK.

CRISPR genome editing allows scientists to quickly create cell and animal models, which researchers can use to accelerate research into diseases such as cancer and mental illness. In addition, CRISPR is now being developed as a rapid diagnostic.

Studies using in vitro (laboratory) and animal models of human disease have demonstrated that the technology can be effective in correcting genetic defects. Examples of such diseases include cystic fibrosis, cataracts, and Fanconi anemia, according to a 2016 review article published in the journal Nature Biotechnology. These studies pave the way for therapeutic applications in humans.

CRISPR technology has also been applied in the food and agricultural industries to engineer probiotic cultures and to vaccinate industrial cultures (for yogurt, for example) against viruses. It is also being used in crops to improve yield, drought tolerance and nutritional properties.

One other potential application is to create gene drives. These are genetic systems, which increase the chances of a particular trait passing on from parent to offspring.

However, CRISPR-Cas9 is not without its drawbacks.

The genome-editing efficiencies can vary. According to the 2014 Science article by Doudna and Charpentier, in a study conducted in rice, gene editing occurred in nearly 50 percent of the cells that received the Cas9-RNA complex. Whereas other analyses have shown that depending on the target, editing efficiencies can reach as high as 80 percent or more.

There is also the phenomenon of “off-target effects,” where DNA is cut at sites other than the intended target. This can lead to the introduction of unintended mutations.
