European Biotech Week: Celebrating Innovation

The European Biotech Week celebrates biotechnology, an innovative and vibrant sector launched by the discovery of the DNA molecule back in 1953. The first European Biotech Week that took place in 2013 marked the 60th anniversary of this pivotal moment in history.

This momentous occasion opened the door to a better understanding of the world we live in both for scientists and for society.

To provide you with an example, DNA triggered crucial discoveries and deeper knowledge on genes, proteins, viruses, bacteria and stem cells.

Biotech entrepreneurs were able to translate this knowledge into applications for many sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, food, energy, water sanitation and biochemical processing, all of which have changed the world for the better.

Biotech associations are key in helping to maximize the potential of biotechnology. In Europe, the National Associations Council, hosted by EuropaBio, represents 17 national biotech associations that together represent over 1,800 small- and medium-sized biotech companies and organisations.

In 2017, the week takes place between 25 September and 1 October.

18th European Congress On Biotechnology @ International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG)
Jul 1 – Jul 4 all-day

The first European Congress of Biotechnology in Interlaken, Switzerland, in 1978 marked the inauguration of the European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB).  In 2018, we are delighted to welcome you back to Switzerland to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the longest running biotechnology congress in Europe.  Between Lake Geneva and surrounding mountains, ECB2018 will be held in the beautiful and vibrant city of Geneva.

EFB began as a rather small group of working parties from different European countries.  Their interests ranged from fermentation technology to the public perception of biotechnology, applied microbiology and genetics, downstream processing and measurement and control. Forty years later, EFB is now open to all who share our mission of promoting the safe, sustainable and ethical use of biological systems for the benefit of mankind. The current 30,000 personal members, who span the world from Latin America to China, Korea and Japan, is also a reflection of the success of recent EFB congresses.

Over the recent years, plant research and its associated technologies have improved drastically as a result of revolutionary breakthroughs such as new gene editing technology and the reduction in the cost of sequencing. As a result of many plants have now been successfully sequenced and a wide range of biological data-set made available, plant scientists are now making use of state of the art technology platforms to help explain biological principals, advance research and therefore enable benefits such as crop improvement and breeding techniques.

Meanwhile, the mass variety of microbes within the plant and soil are not only crucial in plant growth, yield & health, but also in pest management and fixation cycles. The crop quality improving technologies and the new pest control technologies are now becoming important tools to farmers.

This year, we are pleased to announce that the congress is co-located with Microbiome for Agriculture Congress Asia 2019. This congress is part of our highly respected Plant Genomic Series held in Europe each May and the US every September each year.
