In observance of Presidential Proclamation No. 1414, s. 2007, the 13th National Biotechnology Week (NBW) is being organized by Departments of Agriculture (DA), Science & Technology (DOST), Health (DOH), Environment & Natural Resources (DENR), Trade & Industry (DTI), Interior & Local Government (DILG), Education (DepEd), and the Commission of Higher Education (CHED), as well as the academe, civil society organizations, and private companies, constitute the National Biotechnology Week Committee with the Department of Agriculture as its Chair for this year’s celebration.
As part of the NBW Committee, SEARCA Biotechnology Information Center carries out built-up activities for the NBW.

In order to sustainably feed the world, we need to develop farming methods that are environmentally kind and can survive with climate change while increasing the wellbeing of farmers. Agricultural technologies have a number of benefits, including reduced insecticide use, reduced erosion, increased tolerance to environmental disasters such as droughts and floods, and improved nutritional composition that can supplement diets of farmers around the world.
Energy demand is projected to grow by 50% by 2025. Majority of energy is currently derived from fossils fuels, a limited, non-renewable and polluting resource. Switching to biofuels for transportation needs would reduce energy dependency on oil imports and could boost rural development, providing farmers with an additional source of income.
Biotechnology will help in developing specific high-yielding energy crops, the impact, efficiency and sustainability of biorefinery facilities which also decrease the cost of biofuels. Biofuels can replace 30% of current transportation energy needs in an environmentally responsible way without affecting global food production with new technology developments
Biotechnologies, and other biomedical innovations, are likely to lead to the production of new and improved vaccines, diagnostics as well as treatments with which to tackle disease. Biotechnology will help improve the understanding of disease, disease pathology, epidemiology, and vector control.
Biotechnology has opened the door to the discovery and development of new types of human therapeutics. Biotechnology medicines already treat or help prevent heart attacks, stroke, multiple sclerosis, leukemia, hepatitis, congestive heart failure, lymphoma, kidney cancer, cystic fibrosis, and other diseases.

About the Symposium
The Plant Sciences Symposium is primarily a student organized symposia series sponsored by Corteva Agriscience™, an agriculture division of DowDupont™, that is held at universities and research institutes worldwide. The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) is one of the 26 specialist institutions of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO).
