European Biotech Week: Celebrating Innovation

The European Biotech Week celebrates biotechnology, an innovative and vibrant sector launched by the discovery of the DNA molecule back in 1953. The first European Biotech Week that took place in 2013 marked the 60th anniversary of this pivotal moment in history.

This momentous occasion opened the door to a better understanding of the world we live in both for scientists and for society.

To provide you with an example, DNA triggered crucial discoveries and deeper knowledge on genes, proteins, viruses, bacteria and stem cells.

Biotech entrepreneurs were able to translate this knowledge into applications for many sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, food, energy, water sanitation and biochemical processing, all of which have changed the world for the better.

Biotech associations are key in helping to maximize the potential of biotechnology. In Europe, the National Associations Council, hosted by EuropaBio, represents 17 national biotech associations that together represent over 1,800 small- and medium-sized biotech companies and organisations.

In 2017, the week takes place between 25 September and 1 October.

THEME: Change the future of migration.  Invest in food security and rural development.

The Director-General of FAO will be joined by Pope Francis and Ministers of Agriculture attending the Group of Seven (G7) meetings for the official ceremony on 16 October at FAO Headquarters. Whereas traditionally a message from His Holiness is delivered during the WFD ceremony, for the first time, the Pope will attend in person and call on the international community to change the future of migration. The presence of the G7 Ministers of Agriculture will be testament to the important link between food security, rural development and migration on the political agenda. Other special guests will include EU Commissioner Phil Hogan and the Heads of IFAD and WFP.

Programme

The world is on the move. More people have been forced to flee their homes than at any time since the Second World War due to increased conflict and political instability. But hunger, poverty, and an increase in extreme weather events linked to climate change are other important factors contributing to the migration challenge.

Session & Tracks

Track 1: Medical Biotechnology & Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes (e.g. diagnostic or therapeutic). This field seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine, combining the design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to healthcare treatment, including diagnosis, monitoring, and therapyBiomedical engineering has only recently emerged as its own study, compared to many other engineering fields. Such an evolution is common as a new field transitions from being an interdisciplinary specialization among already-established fields, to being considered a field in itself.

Track 3: Genetics and Tissue Science & Engineering

One kind of biotechnology is gene technology, sometimes called ‘genetic engineering’ or ‘genetic modification’, where the genetic material of living things is deliberately altered to enhance or remove a particular trait and allow the organism to perform new functions. Genes within a species can be modified, or genes can be moved from one species to another. Genetic engineering has applications in medicine, research, agriculture and can be used on a wide range of plants, animals and microorganisms. It resulted in a series of medical products. The first two commercially prepared products from recombinant DNA technology were insulin and human growth hormone, both of which were cultured in the E. coli bacteria.

Sessions and Tracks

Track 1: CRISPR Based Technologies and Bio Products

The field of molecular biology overlaps with biology and chemistry and in particular, genetics and biochemistry. A key area of molecular biology concerns understanding how various cellular systems interact in terms of the way DNA, RNA and protein synthesis function.

Track 4: Bioeconomy

The bioeconomy is an economy using biological resources from the land and sea, as well as waste, as inputs to food and feed, industrial and energy production. It also covers the use of bio-based processes for sustainable industries. Bio-waste for example has considerable potential as an alternative to chemical fertilizers or for conversion into bio-energy, and can meet 2% of the EU renewable energy target. In Europe today the bioeconomy is already worth more than 2 trillion euros annually and employs over 22 million people (9% of the total). It includes primary production, such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, and industries using/ processing biological resources, such as the food and pulp and paper industries and parts of the chemical, biotechnological and energy industries. Each euro invested in EU-funded bioeconomy research and innovation in 2012 is estimated to trigger 10 euros of value added in bioeconomy sectors by 2025.

It improves the food we eat – meat, milk and eggs. Biotechnology can improve an animal’s impact on the environment. Animal biotechnology is the use of science and engineering to modify living organisms. The goal is to make products, to improve animals and to develop microorganisms for specific agricultural uses. It  enhances the ability to detect, treat and prevent diseases, include creating transgenic animals (animals with one or more genes introduced by human intervention), using gene knock out technology to make animals with a specific inactivated gene and producing nearly identical animals by somatic cell nuclear transfer (or cloning).

Track 9Microbial Biotechnology

Microorganisms have been exploited for their specific biochemical and physiological properties from the earliest times for baking, brewing, and food preservation and more recently for producing antibiotics, solvents, amino acids, feed supplements, and chemical feedstuffs. Over time, there has been continuous selection by scientists of special strains of microorganisms, based on their efficiency to perform a desired function. Progress, however, has been slow, often difficult to explain, and hard to repeat. Recent developments in molecular biology and genetic engineering could provide novel solutions to long-standing problems. Over the past decade, scientists have developed the techniques to move a gene from one organism to another, based on discoveries of how cells store, duplicate, and transfer genetic information.

Track 13System and Synthetic Biotechnology

System and Synthetic biotechnology is a branch of biotechnology in which molecular biology techniques are used to genetically engineer animals in order to improve their suitability for pharmaceutical, agricultural or industrial applications. Many animals also help by serving as models of disease.  If an animal gets a disease that’s similar to humans, we can use that animal to test treatments.  Animals are often used to help us understand how new drugs will work and whether or not they’ll be safe for humans and effective in treating disease.

Session 17: Global biotechnology Market and entrepreneurship

Biotechnology is one of the strongest growing industries of the twenty- first century. Yet, the sector is still young and many biotechnology firms are at an early stage of their life cycle. Thus, biotechnology and entrepreneurship are intrinsically linked together, and over the last years a substantial number of articles in the entrepreneurship literature have studied biotechnology at the regional, firm, and individual level of analysis. Today the biotechnology sector has a substantial economic impact. The global biotechnology market had total revenues of $200 billion in 2009, representing a compound annual growth rate of 10.2% for the period spanning 2005–2009. Further, US biotechnology firms employed about 112,000 people and European biotechnology firms about 31,000 people in 2010, Due to these impressive numbers, biotechnology has attracted considerable attention not only from policy makers, but also from academic researchers.

Session 20Challenges in Biotechnology

Biotechnology has indeed done a lot of good things for the world, vice versa it also has some disadvantages, in agriculture the Transgenic plants are produced by introducing some genetic traits into the gene of the plant , There are also concerns that genetic engineering of crops would reduce their long-term biological potential. The yield of such crops is typically higher than those of conventional crops. Yet there are concerns that overproduction due to transgenic crops may result in effects such as market instability and it leads to impact on production and global Market, Impact on nature, Biodiversity and the ecosystem, There are risks of transferring toxins from one life form to another, creating new toxins or of transferring allergenic compounds from one species to another, which could result in unexpected allergic reactions so it causes various Impacts on Health also.
