European Biotech Week: Celebrating Innovation

The European Biotech Week celebrates biotechnology, an innovative and vibrant sector launched by the discovery of the DNA molecule back in 1953. The first European Biotech Week that took place in 2013 marked the 60th anniversary of this pivotal moment in history.

This momentous occasion opened the door to a better understanding of the world we live in both for scientists and for society.

To provide you with an example, DNA triggered crucial discoveries and deeper knowledge on genes, proteins, viruses, bacteria and stem cells.

Biotech entrepreneurs were able to translate this knowledge into applications for many sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, food, energy, water sanitation and biochemical processing, all of which have changed the world for the better.

Biotech associations are key in helping to maximize the potential of biotechnology. In Europe, the National Associations Council, hosted by EuropaBio, represents 17 national biotech associations that together represent over 1,800 small- and medium-sized biotech companies and organisations.

In 2017, the week takes place between 25 September and 1 October.

The first European Congress of Biotechnology in Interlaken, Switzerland, in 1978 marked the inauguration of the European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB).  In 2018, we are delighted to welcome you back to Switzerland to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the longest running biotechnology congress in Europe.  Between Lake Geneva and surrounding mountains, ECB2018 will be held in the beautiful and vibrant city of Geneva.

EFB began as a rather small group of working parties from different European countries.  Their interests ranged from fermentation technology to the public perception of biotechnology, applied microbiology and genetics, downstream processing and measurement and control. Forty years later, EFB is now open to all who share our mission of promoting the safe, sustainable and ethical use of biological systems for the benefit of mankind. The current 30,000 personal members, who span the world from Latin America to China, Korea and Japan, is also a reflection of the success of recent EFB congresses.

About IRRI

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is a dynamic, rapidly evolving organization focused on solving complex global problems through vibrant, rice-based agri-food systems. IRRI’s mission and purpose remain clear: to improve the quality of life of those who depend on the rice sector—from the ultra-poor to those moving up the development ladder—and the environmental sustainability of rice production systems.

As a founding member of CGIAR, IRRI contributes to the collective goals of CGIAR as articulated through its strategy and results framework and is the lead center of the CGIAR Research Program on Rice.

The world faces multiple complex challenges: continued population growth; scarcity of land, water, and labor; rapid urbanization; and climate change. Despite exponential technology advances and the continued evolution of the roles of the public and private sectors, it is clear that such complex challenges will rarely be solved by simple solutions.

IRRI has an opportunity to make a profound difference over the next few critical decades based on our differentiating capacities at the intersection of research and development.

IRRI aims to improve livelihoods and nutrition, abolishing poverty, hunger, and malnutrition among those who depend on rice-based agri-food systems. In doing so, IRRI’s work protects the health of rice farmers and consumers, and the environmental sustainability of rice farming in a world challenged by climate change. IRRI’s work promotes the empowerment of women and supports opportunities for youth in an equitable agri-food system.

Our research for development is characterized by its collaborative nature: from alliances with advanced research institutes; through strong collaborations and capacity development with governments and national agricultural research and extension systems; to partnerships with the development sector and our ability to broker novel delivery channels through the private sector. IRRI’s work is supported by a diverse network of investors aligned to common goals.
